Monstera Adansonii Care Guide: Tips for a Thriving Monkey Mask Plant

Monstera adansonii is formally known as the Mexican breadfruit plant, although most people refer to it as the monkey mask plant. The nickname has a few possible origins – some say the leaves and their holes resemble a monkey’s face, while others believe monkeys use the leaves to peek through as if they were masks. This tropical evergreen makes a striking houseplant, especially for anyone wanting a bold touch of greenery. Compared to its close relative, Monstera deliciosa, the adansonii grows more modestly, making it a smart pick if you enjoy dramatic foliage but don’t have much space.

The broad leaves of Monstera adansonii naturally form holes, a process called fenestration. Experts think this adaptation helps sunlight pass through to the lower leaves in its native environment. In the wild forests of Central and South America, the plant can climb to nearly 3 meters, but indoors it usually reaches between 90 cm and 2 meters. You can support it to grow upwards by securing the stems to a moss pole, or let it cascade beautifully from a shelf.

This plant is poisonous to both humans and pets, so it is essential to keep it in a safe location.

Monstera Adansonii Care

This Monstera adansonii care will help your plant grow strong, lush, and full of character.

Light

Monstera adansonii adapts well to a range of light settings, but it thrives best in bright, indirect light. A sunnier position will encourage faster growth, though you should avoid harsh direct rays as they can scorch its thin, delicate leaves. This plant also tolerates shorter winter days, making it a reliable choice year-round.

Water

This Monstera doesn’t demand heavy watering but prefers a consistent routine. Let the upper 2–3 inches of soil dry out before adding water again. During the colder months, reduce the frequency since the soil will stay moist for longer.

Humidity

Native to humid rainforests, Monstera adansonii enjoys extra moisture in the air. Mist the leaves occasionally, place the pot on a pebble tray, or keep a humidifier nearby to mimic its natural surroundings.

Temperature

Because of its fine foliage, this plant struggles in cooler conditions. The ideal indoor range is between 20 and 30 30°C. As long as the temperature doesn’t drop below 20°C, your Monstera will remain content.

Feeding

Boost growth with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks from spring through early autumn (March–September). This will keep the plant strong and full of fresh leaves.

Repotting

Monstera adansonii grows rapidly, especially in spring and summer, often producing an abundance of new foliage. Repot it once a year using a rich, well-draining mix such as peat-free coconut coir to give the roots more space and nutrients.

Monstera Adansonii Troubleshooting

Dry or crispy leaf edges – When the leaf tips turn brown and feel brittle, it usually means your Monstera adansonii isn’t getting enough humidity. Raise the moisture level by misting the foliage every couple of days or by moving the plant to a naturally damp spot, such as a bathroom.

Drooping leaves – If the foliage starts to hang limply, the soil has likely dried out too much. Check the top few inches of soil; if it feels completely dry, give your plant a thorough watering. Always let excess water drain away, either by emptying the decorative pot or placing the plant in the sink or tub until the water runs through.

Yellow leaves – Yellowing leaves are often a warning sign of overwatering. Trim off the affected leaf by cutting it close to the stem and adjust your watering routine, especially during the cooler months when the soil stays moist longer.

Slow or no new growth – A Monstera adansonii that stops producing fresh leaves may need more light or a bigger pot. Shift it to a brighter location with plenty of indirect sunlight, and check the roots annually to see if it has outgrown its container. Repotting into fresh soil can give it the boost it needs.

Bonus Care Tips

Tip 1: Monstera adansonii absorbs moisture through its leaves, so wipe the foliage with a damp cloth every couple of weeks. This not only removes dust but also helps the plant breathe and stay healthy.

Tip 2: This plant is sensitive to drafts and sudden temperature changes. Keep your Monstera adansonii away from radiators, air vents, or open windows during the colder months.

Tip 3: Being a natural climber, Monstera adansonii will happily grow upwards when supported. Use a moss pole or trellis to guide its stems and encourage strong vertical growth.
